Cleaning Mantas

For the fourth year running, we’ve partnered with ScubaSpa to bring you the unforgettable Love Mantas Week—a soul-stirring journey where luxury, marine exploration, and conservation unite.

Set sail aboard the ScubaSpa fleet, stunning floating resorts designed for divers and non-divers alike. With its spacious decks, full-service spa, fine dining, and panoramic suites, the fleet redefines liveaboard comfort. But what truly sets this journey apart lies beneath the surface.

Starting in the world-famous Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve where the nutrient-rich waters of Hanifaru Bay create the perfect conditions for mesmerizing manta feeding frenzies. Here dozens—sometimes hundreds— of mantas spiral gracefully in tight cyclone formations. Featuring gently sloping reefs, coral gardens, and sheltered lagoons alive with reef fish, turtles, and the occasional whale shark Baa is undoubtedly one of the highlights.

Venturing north into Raa Atoll, we’ll discover a wild, less-traveled region where exposed outer reefs meet dramatic underwater architecture. Steep ridges, hidden swim-throughs, and coral-draped overhangs create ideal currents for plankton blooms—natural feeding hotspots for mantas that glide effortlessly along these channels. Schools of fusiliers shimmer above the reef while grey reef sharks patrol the drop-offs, and eagle rays soar through open blue water. Between excursions, the atoll’s quiet lagoons and uninhabited islands invite you to unwind in absolute tranquility.

Noonu Atoll – Deep Channels & Gentle Giants
Noonu’s broad channels and deeper basins offer a striking contrast, with swift currents funneling life through canyon-like passages. These nutrient-rich flows attract pelagics and support healthy coral formations that cascade down into the depths. Mantas are often spotted at local cleaning stations, circling patiently as small reef fish tend to them. The atoll’s topography—marked by pinnacles rising from the seafloor—hosts dense clouds of anthias, while turtles drift lazily across garden-like plateaus. At the surface, calm turquoise shallows and secluded sandbanks offer idyllic pauses between marine adventures.

Lhaviyani Atoll – Canyons, Pinnacles & Plankton Blooms
Famous for its dynamic channels and towering thilas, Lhaviyani Atoll delivers an exhilarating blend of topography and wildlife. Plankton-rich currents sweep through narrow passes, creating natural theaters where mantas glide past boldly colored soft corals and gorgonian fans. Here, you’ll encounter vibrant fish life, from swirling jacks to curious batfish, along with the occasional napoleon wrasse cruising by. The atoll’s sandy lagoons are perfect for afternoon relaxation, offering postcard-perfect vistas of white sand and shimmering shallows after mornings spent exploring its dramatic underwater world.

Return to Baa – A Finale with the Mantas
Your voyage circles back to Baa Atoll for a final rendezvous with the mantas of Hanifaru Bay. With our crew in constant communication with local rangers and drone teams scanning from above, we seize the perfect moment to slip once more into the water among these gentle giants. Whether you’re witnessing a serene ballet of solitary mantas or a powerful cyclone-feeding event, this concluding chapter in Baa brings the expedition full circle, leaving you with unforgettable impressions of the Maldives’ most magical marine experience.

Between dives, indulge in spa treatments, sunrise yoga, and gourmet meals under the stars. You may also have the chance to spot whale sharks, explore breath-taking coral reefs, and enjoy themed evenings that celebrate the beauty of the ocean and its charismatic creatures.

A journey of connection, awareness, and impact. By the end of the week, you won’t just have memories of awe-inspiring encounters; you’ll leave knowing you’ve contributed to the protection of one a vulnerable species.

MEET YOUR MANTA EXPERT

Frances Budd

Frances (Frankie) was extremely lucky to see oceanic manta rays during her first ever dives and has loved them ever since. With a goal of working in the marine conservation sector, she studied Ecology and Environmental Science at the University of Edinburgh and gained some field experience working with Operation Wallacea teaching scientific survey techniques to young adults. Having interned with the Manta Trust's affiliate project, the Manta Caribbean Project, Frankie went on to be Project Manager in Lhaviyani Atoll for the Manta Trust's flagship project in theMaldives, studying the local subpopulation of manta rays and contributing to other conservation efforts in the area. Now, whilst her role has evolved away from the water, as the charity's Relationship Manager, she makes the most of every opportunity to assist with our research and outreach efforts in the field. Being in the ocean is her favourite place to be.
