Kumejima is one of Japan’s most promising destinations for encounters with reef mantas: seasonal aggregations draw these gentle giants to the island’s cleaning stations, where they glide effortlessly above the reef, often allowing for prolonged and unforgettable encourters. It offers a rare opportunity not just to see mantas, but to truly understand their behavior in a natural and relatively undisturbed environment.

Join a small group of just 6 divers, working closely with the newly established Japan Manta Project leader, for a very engaging and immersive expedition.

Beyond the mantas, Kumejima’s underwater landscape sets the scene for a one of a kind destination: volcanic topography has shaped dramatic drop-offs, channels, and reef structures that mantas frequent, while consistently clear blue water—often with visibility exceeding 20–30 meters—sets the perfect diving conditions.

Experience a rich ecosystem, healthy coral reefs support a wide diversity of marine life, from schools of reef fish to macro species hidden in sandy patches and crevices. The influence of the Kuroshio Current brings nutrient-rich water and occasional pelagic visit, adding an element of unpredictability to every dive.

What truly sets Kumejima apart is its sense of remoteness and focus. Compared to
more frequented areas of Okinawa, dive sites here remain uncrowded, allowing for
more respectful wildlife interactions and a deeper connection to the environment. This makes Kumejima an ideal setting for research, conservation, and intentional diving centered around manta rays.

MEET YOUR MANTA EXPERT
Rika Ozaki is a marine scientist and the founder of the Japan Manta Project, dedicated
to understanding and conserving manta and devil rays in Japanese waters. Originally from
Japan, Rika grew up in Aotearoa New Zealand, her career path was shaped by a transformative
encounter with an oceanic manta ray—an experience that led her to pursue marine science.

After earning her Master’s degree from the University of Auckland, she pursued a research
internship in Okinawa, where she recognised the gap in research on mobulid rays in Japan.
This led her to establish the Japan Manta Project.

Her work combines field research, satellite tagging, and collaboration with local fishing communities
and dive operators to better understand manta ray ecology, movement, and threats. Through the Japan
Manta Project, she aims to bridge science and conservation, translating research into meaningful, locally driven
protection efforts

The enthusiasm and flexibility of the
crew, the knowledge from Niv and the camaraderie of participants
made this trip magnificent.
